Battery Point is just like Paris in that there is a host of quality gourmet restaurants all around the city and waterfront, as well as a range of neighbourhood family restaurants to suite all tastes and budgets.
We recommend you look no further than our own neighbourhood Battery Point and walk to the Hampden Road area and you’ll find plenty of good restaurants (not touristy either) to choose from. Here are some of the restaurants we have enjoyed:
The Shipwright’s Inn (or ‘Shippies’ as it is known locally) is an atmospheric historic pub that is for an older, more upmarket crowd. Their motto is ‘No Pokies’, No TAB, No Tofu’, so you can see they are just all about drinks and conversation – a very old fashioned pub. The Bistro serves simple fare well. 29 Trumpeter Street, Battery Point. Ph: 6223 5551
The Prince of Wales is a good pub as well – but it is more modern than The Shipwright’s Inn. The pub bistro is popular with holiday makers for quick bistro food such as steaks, pasta, and fish and chips. It has a bottleship – so you can buy wine to take home. 55 Hampden Road, Battery Point. Ph: 62236355.
Mummy’s is an excellent café that serves fabulous breakfasts and lunches as well as light, simple fare for dinner. Its great for all the family. 38 Waterloo Cresecent, Battery Point. 6224 0124
Jackman & McCross – truly has to be one of the finest bakeries in the whole of Australia not just Hobart. I’d certainly recommend a coffee break, breakfast or lunch here. Even better pick up what you need and take it back home to have on the deck. They have a wide range of breads – from sourdough to fruit loaf – and pastries – from croissants to Danish – and a wonderful array of Australian meat pies with fantastic fillings. Everything is very ‘Hearty’ so while its tempting, don’t go overboard!
Gondwana – is very upmarket – for a special occasion rather than every day eating – unless you like to eat that way all the time. Cnr Hampden Road and Francis Street, Battery Point. Ph: 96249033
Along Hampden Road we also recommend the Italian restaurant there for fabulous food and pizzas, as well as the Indian and Spanish restaurant. We’d also recommend you go to the old fashioned English Sweet Shop, in Battery Point, purely for nostalgia, of course!
